The QJoint Tree ID Threads:Oak

The intent of this thread is to help our users and guests identify and become more familiar with the trees used in BBQ and smoking by posting pictures of the leaves, the bark, the fruit and the flowers of each tree.
The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech has given us permission to post pictures from their VT Tree ID website-

Notes on using the VT Tree ID page-
The trees are listed by their scientific names first and their common names second so be patient if you are looking for a particular tree and don't find it right away.
I am providing a link back to the VT site for each species so you can view all the information that they provide on each species. The link takes you to a "flash card" with all the pertinent information about that particular tree. In addition there are links to similar trees in the same genus or family so you can easily cross reference and compare similar trees.
As a friendly reminder, these pictures from the Virginia Tech site are copywritten by Virginia Tech and should not be reposted to another site for public display without permission from The Dendrology Dept. at VT.



A couple of notes on oak- There are, by my count, 49 species of oak in the U.S. which means that post ID info on all of these would make this thread impossibly large, so I have limited this thread to the Oak species that are most often referenced on BBQ forums. If I have missed one of the more commonly used oak species please let me know, by post or PM, and I will add it to the thread. Additionally there are many oaks that are known locally as "red oak", including the coast live oak used in California. In the southern and eastern regions of the country the following may also be known locally as "red oak"- scarlet oak, cherrybark oak, Shumard oak and Nuttall oak. In addition to the short list pictured here users on the various BBQ forums have reported using pin oak, black oak, water oak, chestnut oak, valley live oak and scrub oak.
The oaks are listed under the Family heading "Fagaceae" on the VT website.
Mesquite is listed under the Family heading "Fabaceae" on the VT website.

That was my thinking but was warned that there may be a limit to the # of photos that could be posted in one thread. Rather than take a chance on having to post more than one thread, I decided to do each individually. The Hickory thread was made a sticky and I'm assuming that the rest will be also so they all should be easy to find.
