    Default ThermoPen Vs. Maverick PT-100

Some time back I promised that I would be doing a side by side comparison of the Thermapen thermometer vs. the Maverick PT-100. There was some issue to the speed and overall feature comparisons.

Today I am cooking a brisket. Nothing special, just another whole packer brisket. Injected, rubbed, and smoked. I have to apologize for the picture quality as the wife took the camera to work and I'm stuck using the cell camera - bad timing.

Both thermometers were laid out on the counter to come to the same room temperature before starting any comparisons. The first thing I noticed when opening both up. There was a 3 degree difference between them. The Thermapen was reading warmer than the Maverick.

So far I've taken a few pictures to show the temp differences and proximity of the two probes to each other.

Comparing the two thermometers visually, they each have their own merits and both companies could take a few tips from the other - in my humble opinion.

The Thermapen is a clean sleek design, looks good (of course in varying degrees of fast colors)

The Maverick PT-100 also looks good, but lacks some in styling. The back lit display is a great plus and is $30 cheaper.

The cons: The Thermapen is pricey at $96 plus shipping. The Maverick is slower to respond to temperatures, seems to ramp up to the temperature.

I'll try to get some more pics and compare the temps to a wired probe to see how they come out ... but for now that's all I have.

    Here's the pics I have

I didn't check them against each other, but I did verify accuracy with ice water/boiling water and the Maverick was on the money. I know that the Thermapen is calibratable, but I don't know how to do it. I don't know if the Maverick is or not.

Yes, go ahead and mail it. Thanks.
Probably not on Christmas Eve. We usually have a family event as well as a short church service. Thanks for asking.
