Default Wood to Smoke in SE Michigan

    Everyone,

I had a small hardware store in town where I have been getting my wood chunks to smoke with for the last few years. They had apple, cherry, hickory, mesquite. Well they no longer carry the wood, and I have checked Lowes and Home Depot, but they mainly just carry mesquite and hickory. I don't mind the Hickory, but really like the apple and cherry.

So my question is, does anyone know any place in SE Michigan where I can get wood to smoke with? Can I just call orchards, for some apple wood that they may get from dead trees or trimmings?

If no one knows a place in MI, how about an online store that won't sock it to you.

    Thanks Everyone!!!

P.S. If this wasn't the right section for this post, Mod's please feel free to move.

Orchards might share their trimmings. You might offer to pick up fallen limbs for them also. Maybe a spring thing.
Talk to local tree services, sometimes they take down smoke worthy trees and might let you have some or sell you some.

Around here, Ace Hardware tends to carry different types of woods. Is there one near you?

Moved here from Plymouth and nothing comes to mind. Except there are a lot of apple orchards that probably have limbs around.

Search on eBay for "smoker wood" and a ton of stuff comes up. Stick with top rated sellers and you should be OK.

Oh, and shame on me for not mentioning you can buy some right from this very website, that helps support the Q Joint. http://www.theqjoint.com/flavorwood/

Thanks everyone. I will look into all those options. I can find an ace around here. I was finding my wood from the local True Value, but that changed. So I will check with an Ace, orchards and the sponsor tha tyou linked to.

Sorry I can't help ya. Here in Texas I can get all the mesquite, hickory, pecan I want. And more oak than I'll ever use in a lifetime in my own yard. Apple and cherry? Not so much.
