    Default For James

I announced to every one when James B. passed that that I was going to build a UDS as a memorial to a special person who was a friend and a respected member of the BBQ community.I completed the build on WED. and seasoned and did the first cook yesterday. I was going to name this pit J.B. but I changed my mind I decided on BIG JIM. Because James was Big of heart.
I started with a used 1 time drum manufactured on 10-23-09 open head with no Bung.I got a deal on these $10.00 a piece. but it needed burned out to remove the liner.

The build was pretty straight forward I went with a total of 3 3/ 4" intakes 1 with a ball valve. Pipe caps are PVC on close nipples locked in place with conduit nuts. I used 1" cut washers on all nipples to make the area a little stiffer. There are 2 4" casters and a 12" long foot for stability on the bottom. I installed a conduit wire pass through for my thermo leads and I made a utility shelf from a wooden TV table. The exhaust is a 2" conduit "B" connector. The charcoal basket is a Weber 18" kettle coal grate and the sides are 8" tall Expanded Metal, the bail is from an old plastic hydraulic oil bucket. Painted with two coats of 1200 deg Krylon.

This drum is really controllable I fired it the first time at 9 AM and ran it up to 225. it drifted up to 228 and down to 223 for 2 hrs. then I ran it up to 325 and held it for an hour then up to 375 for 45 min. Put the caps back on and closed the valve to 3/8 open it settled out at 240. I tossed on a western omelet Fatty and a couple of baked potatoes( breakfast today). Of course I had to christen the first cook with a nice cold mug of Home brew.
Be kind to me, it's not my fault I'm a "PORK-A-HOLIC"!!

Very solid build and a very honorable gesture. You are a stand up guy and stood behind your word. Great change up in the name.

Thank you for sharing this with us and for honoring James in such a great manner. He is smiling down at you.
