    Cool UDS Build #4

Well here goes build #4. Got this drum a while ago. Its a 55 gal. drum made with 16 ga. and reinforced top and bottom rim. Was a closed head that i cut the top off of. Got a Weber kettle for the lid. It does have a liner that needs to be burned and sanded out. A little extra work but the end result is well worth it !!!
Getting ready for the burn !!!

    Loaded up with some oak.

    Burn baby burn !!!!!!!

    Cool UDS build #4

Just got back from power washing it. The burn got most of the liner out of it. Now tomorrow i can start sanding it down, inside and out. Then drill all the holes needed and hopefully get it painted.

    Cool UDS build #4

Finally got a chance to work on it. Sanded out what didn't burn off on the inside. On this one i got 2-1" ball valves and 3 vents w/caps. (2 at 3/4" and 1 at 1" ) Wanted more than enough vents so i can get the temps up to 350* for chicken. Being that the elbows restrict the airflow somewhat, i went with extra vents with caps to compensate. Painted it with a high temp silver base coat then a couple coats with a "hammered" texture black paint from Lowes. The lid, a Weber kettle i got off craigs list, and piping were done with a dark grey "hammered" paint. Gonna season it tomorrow and got some spares thawing out for its maiden voyage on Sunday !!!

We have cooked a few comp using a drum. we always hear people walking by aying thing like "Oh look, they're cooking on a garbage can."

You would never hear that said of that fine looking piece of equipment.

I just got a closed lid drum to try my first build on one of these, going to school fulltime and a son playing tounament baseball really limits the amount of time I have, so I'm still looking for and open lid drum. Yours looks Great, I have a question though, is that themo just below grate level or is that an optical allusion, just curious as I'm all new to the building a smoker world, was going to buy a CG w/sfb but decided against it because of storage space when not in use!

    Cool Thermometer

Buzzwinder, yes the thermometer is located just below the bottom grate. This gives me, what i feel, the most accurate grate level temp. The thermometer is a Tel-Tru BQ300 w/4" stem.

Very nice looking drum.I keep looking for a lid but so far have not been lucky enough to find one. Even have wife out scouting when she goes to garage sales.
