Here's a tip: Put 12 ribs in the box. Make sure they are separate. We had 2 boxes yesterday that had 12 in them and they both scored well. Course the fact the ribs were good helped. But a nice FULL box works appearance-wise.
Is Stillwater a KCBS comp.?
We would've had trouble fitting even 1 more rib in the box. We turned in whole spares. They were great too, maybe even the best ribs I've ever had, but the judges didn't think they were that good.
Gotta take into account who's judging too.
Stillwater has a reputation for that type of thing. it was our practice cook, and it looks like we needed one!

Crap like that happens when all you have to work with for a brain is an antique.

Hey Smoky, we talked about this one at Enid.
You gotta go with the rules and it requires 6. What happens is the last judge has to give you a 1 on taste and tenderness because he doesn't get one to eat.
Caution. This can also happen if you trim ribs and don't cut all the way through. I've seen it.
So it's not just about counting, it's about counting INDIVIDUAL pieces (happens a lot of brisket but I've seen it in ribs)
Never have I see whole spares. And the portion from the knuckle out is very different texture than the rib so it can affect you tenderness.
Just trim the ribs up if you don't turn in BB and you'll get more in.

We are convinced on the "no full spares" advice. Once again, we let our personal preferences get in the way of good sound advice. From 40th to 9th, what an we say?
My comment about the judges not liking them was referring to the scores that we did get,
Buttlover's had the stick together there, hence the title of this thread.
