    Default An Okie in Minnesota

Hello to the group. I joined because this does seem to be the group with the biggest interest and information. Being from OK with sojourns into Texas, and Kansas City, I grew up with great Q. I've been working for the last 30 years off and on to try to perfect my work.

I started with an upright 55 gallon drum smoker I made myself in Northern Minnesota. Only fired with a hot plate and having a swing door in the side, cold smoke was the order of the cool days and nights.

I next made a small drum (Texas Style) horizontal cooker. It worked great for grilling, but was not a true Bar B Q machine. I then built a couple of small drum upright smokers (Brinkman copies) which worked great, but were very limited in capacity. A lot of good turkeys, Salmon, ribs and sausage got cooked in them, though.

I now have a Brinkman Pitmaster which is a low end horizontal stick burner type which is somewhat effective, but I struggle with even temps. If anyone has experience with these I would love some input on working with them.

I am now planning to add a UDB to my arsenal. Since they are larger versions of the smaller uprights that I have had in the past, I look forward to trying it out.

Glad to be here. I may post some pics, when I can.

I don't know what the actual temp is, but it cooks the way I want it to, so I don't guess it really matters.

Welcome to The Joint slohand42! Great to see you hanging out here.
You are correct about the place with the most interest and information. You struck gold here bud.
Now. About Northern Minnesoda and "the 'cool' days and nights" - Ya ain't kiddin' me. (Guess you took a wrong turn and ended up there huh?)
I lived on the very north edge of the Twin Cities metro 11 years, East Bethel, MN, not even close to northern Minnesoda. The days and nights there were "cool" in the summer and DA** COLD in the winter.
Course I know after a while you get used to it. I did. Winters here in the KC area are mild.
    Again -
And post those pics! We like 'em!

    Welcome to The Joint SH!

I'll not call you an ex-Okie like my friend Cabinetmaker cuz i think "Once and Okie, always an Okie"

I have some thoughts on the small offset and temp regulation, but we can get to that later. I would only start by saying that thatis a battle you will most likely continue.

Drop me a PM if you want to visit further about it.
