Weber Flange Mod
Here is what I do with my open drums for a better seal when using a Weber kettle lid or rotisserie ring. I cut about 2" off the lip of the bottom of a rustbucket kettle and slip it in the top of the drum and the lid fits securely instead of balancing on the drum. Remove it and I can use the drum lid. Not all drums are created equal, and some may require a bead of high temp silicone on the flange. This also helps holding the EZ-Que or Weber rotis ring in place. The only smoke loss I have using these are at the spit cutouts.

I do the same with closed drums- I'll cut inside the bead and leave @1/8" of the top and slide the flange firmly (rubber mallet) into the opening, this eliminates the lid sitting on the band and having grease and condensation streak the outside of the drum.

Hope this helps! It works for me.

I don't know what the actual temp is, but it cooks the way I want it to, so I don't guess it really matters.

I'd be careful about using those Zep Chemical drums for cooking. Their company is a competitor of mine and I understand that they only use evil chemicals.

Steam cleaned and burnt that Zep drum out, I've since gotten a line on closed drums that contained Olive oil and some open drums that had latex paint in lined bladders if I ever get drum build deprived.

Are you sure you burned and steam cleaned all the "Evil" out?

Brian, great idea on the drum mods!
I checked the other nite and with my closed top cut below the rim of the drum the weber lid fits perfectly. I havent fired it yet with the weber lid so dont know how much smoke/heat loss I will have, but will check soon.
I have read somewhere about folks using thin flexible kitchen refrig magnets to seal those slots/holes and make er more efficient, havent tried it myself but when I go in stall the rotiss the slots will be into my drum itself so I will want someway of coverin them up when not in use. Just a thought.
Again, nice mods, looks like they work real well!!!
