    Default The Royal

Jane and I spent an interesting afternoon at The Royal. About 500 BBQ teams! WOW!
We met Captain Caveman from down Carthage, MO way and his group. Good folks!
We also met recent newcomer to The Joint, Sledneck. He was hanging with the brothers and groupies at the BBQ Brethren site. Said he "flew into KC today just to be with the Brethren brothers, eat que and drink cheap bourbon". And he was getting it done. Met the founder of The BBQ Brethren and a bunch of other folks too numerous to recall all their names.
Talked with Jeff of Big Creek Barbeque over at Pleasant Hill, MO, a short drive from Peculiar. They competed in the inventational and were getting set up to do it all over again for the open. That's a lot of work!
We toured Hale Arena, home of The Royal, and checked out the various venders. Met Jamie Geer of Jambo Pits from down Texas way. He is building Bud & Tonto's (Smokin' Scotsmen Team, Ada, MI) new Geer pit for them and had one exactly like what he is building for them sitting on display. Only difference was color. Bud & Tonto's will be all black, the only one he has built that color. Nice pits! Real nice. And they should be. High buck!
Talked a bit with Jim Stewert of Jimbob's, local KC area Backwoods Smoker and BBQ Guru dealer. That was real interesting and may lead to some local drum smoker sales for me. Gotta get busy building drums ASAP.
Then we went over to The Dark Side.
That is the rear of Hale Arena where most of the competitors are located under the overpass and it is PARTY CITY. About 40% of the teams come to The Royal to seriously compete, the other 60% are there to cook some que and party, and if they remember to, turn in a few samples. Walking down the street we were passed by an ATV pulling a trailer with 5 guys and 14 kegs on it. They were headed back to the Team Bone Head site which already had a band set up and ready. Gonna be a long night!
I have pics, but have not downloaded them yet. I will tomorrow. Gotta say it was an interesting afternoon.
Then we stopped at Minsky's Pizza and had a Papa Minsky's Special. Ha!

You know, I've lived this close to KC all these years and I've never been to the American Royal. Guess I need to get that done, huh? Sounds like the evening after a Busch Series Race (or whatever they've decided to call it this year), all weekend long!

We didn't stay for awards. Enjoyed all we could stand after about 4 hours. Caveman gave results for the open. No idea who got what in the inventational. KC Star doesn't bother to cover that. Guess the event just isn't important enough.
