Royal Oak. Hmmmmm........
To get right to the rat killin', yesterday when I went to buy supplies to make a batch of BBQ, the only charcoal available was Royal Oak, a twin pack. Other option was a 40 minute drive to Lowes for lump, and that was no option at all, really.
So just now I'm firing up the UDS, but this RO stuff seems to take a LOT longer to run up than "Blue Bag" charcoal.
Bag says its "ridged" to "light faster", but I dunno.......time will tell but I think I need to lay in a stash of lump for the winter!

I haven't used RO Briquettes in a long time but I prefer them over KBB Less ash and a hotter & longer burn time they take a little longer to ignite but patience will be rewarded.

On sale $7.50 for two 15 lb bags at Piggly Wiggly!

I wouldn't put Roayl Oak briquets or KBB either one in any of my cookers. I can't stand the smell of the coal (not charcoal, but the out of the ground coal) that they put in it. Did oyu notice the smell when you lit it?

I can't say as though I noticed any particularly strong smell when it was running up, or when I lit the starter coals on the side initially. I have a pretty fair sniffer, too, but since I was not especially "sniffing", I may have let it slide by.

If you ever light up a chimney of RO lump and then light one of KBB, you will probably swear off the KBB.

Never been disappointed with Ozark Oak. $4.99, 10# bag here in Tulsa.
BellFab custom offset, Hasty Bake Legacy 131, Ozark Oak Lump and local native hardwoods.

He's; not going to be able to find that in NC though John.
RO lump is pretty close to OO.

Don't believe that RO puts "mineral carbon" in their briqs, I use them a lot and have never had any "off" smells. RO also makes the house brand for WalMart, Family Dollar and the Home 360 brand found at the Hannaford supert market chain in the Northeast to name a few. I have used all these briqs with success, although the WalMart brand has too much binder(because of the larger size) and doesn't burn as hot as the others IMHO.

They told me they did. Kingsford told me they didn't, but later, they had a show on TV where they showed them doing just that. If you have ever lived anywhere where people burn coal for heat, you will never forget the smell.
