If it is real sparky, it is the wrong brand, and most likely South American wood. It should spark more than briquettes, but it shouldn't be like fireworks (Kingsford is the worst I have seen for that)

You need to remember too, that a chimney full of lump = abotu half the weight of briquettes and think in terms of weight instead of volume.

Lump will burn hotter and faster than briquettes, but it has a lot more heat per pound. there is also a lot more air in any given volume of lump because it doesn't fit together as compactly as the regular shaped briquettes.

Try weighing out 2# of briquettes and 2# of lump then burning it. You will see what I mean pretty quickly.

Man, I cooked a butt over lump last week. Turned out ssooooooo goooooodddd. If I take the lid off it is for a few seconds only. Lump is good. Have about 9 bags of 3-4 different brands. This should hold me for a bit.

Txt`d the daughter and sent her a pic of the but on the UDS and a pic of the butt before I forked into it. She has requested one when she gets home in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

    lil charlie, whats next?
