Hello,I am almost done building my first smoker(250 gallon drum,horizontal build/direct heat) I would like to know(since I've read alot on direct & indirect heat) if smoking my first 100lb pig over direct heat will be alright? Also,should I wrap ears and the like in foil for the 1st 6 hours to prevent burning?) I'm open to all suggestions and comments. I don't want or need to have an epic fail when I have my 1st pig pickin july 6th! :msn-wink:

I removed the steel post that were rusted through at the bottom,with 4x4 post pt .Gots 7 more to do ,Gonna put pvc 4x8 sheets lattice up to cover the whole bottom.

and at that very moment all 3 cell phones in the car start going off about flood warnings.

now the smoker is fine, the guru however is in a bowl of rice. just in case. not sure how little or how much water proofing those things have, but I wasn't a happy camper.. might improve my attitude. stupid smart cookers and the gadgets that take all the fun out of it.. ha. oh well, whats the worse that can happen? I know a guy that sells these things..

oh and now..it's not raining.. really?

I found a place to maybe get a heartland smoker 2430 for $500. I don't know what it classifies as.. offset, etc.

Anybody know of these, are they any good? I need more capacity than my drum and thought the rotisserie might be rather useful.
