Just got back from the Shannon, IL. Field of Dreams competition.

Had a great time, met a lot fo great people and BBQ legends.

Walked for a 3rd place brisket (less than 2 points out of 1st place), and bombed pretty much everything else)

I have a few pix to share, but it's late tonight and I'm wasted tired.

Will report more with pix tomorrow if time allows.

One of your goals this year should be to make it to the TQJ get together at Valpo. You WON'T be sorry. Or hungry. :D

We cooked on my old Backwoods Piglet, my Backwoods Extended Party, my FEC 100, and my Hasty Bake.

I didn't get time to get any pix myself, but QPoke shot these

So, how did you cook the brisket??? Rub???
Did you just cook brisket or did you do the other meats also?

Buy one of those $18000 Gere pits that burns one split at a time, you'll be walking at those comps. :thumbs up:

SmokyOkie

I did walk.

I did most of the cooking on all the meats. there were some parts that I didn't do that I should have.

For a rag tag spur of the moment team thrown together with most folks that had never done a comp, coupled with the fact that I haven't cooked a competition since September, 22nd out of 61 wasn't bad.

If not for the mistakes, I think we would have at least been top 5.

I don't have any interest in doing comps with a stick burner. Too much work, and not enough sleep. all the guys that do that are always super grouchy on Saturday, and I'm grouchy enough as is.

YOU??! Grouchy?? No waaayyy :roflmaoha0:

Maybe the judges were just wrong and you finished 1st in all three?? :msn-wink: I'm sure they'll be in touch with you any time now to let you know.

They weren't wrong....well, one of the brisket judges was an #@$!#@$!#@$!, but actually thye were knd on the other 3 meats. No complaints form us.

the tough part was trying to explain to the new compers on the team why the meat they thought was the best they ever had was only middle of the road.

well okie some of the meat was not the best we have ever had you tought us better than that!! brisket and chicken were very good pork but ok ribs not for me , you did hook us though we will do a small fair comp in aug. and see what happes after that. tim did teach us alot things went prety smoth for having so m any first timers :sign0092:

SmokyOkie

I think you'll shine at the Fairbury fair contest. The ribs would've scored much better if they hadn't dried out on a hold cycle. Pork was dry and hard. I am amazed that it scored as well as it did.

Thanx Jeannie.

I think it was good all things considered, especially because I know what went wrong, and I had anticipated things going wrong the way they did.

It was kinda like a minor league team going to play the Yankees, and losing but not getting creamed.:roflmaoha0:
