View Full Version : Duo Charcoal Basket Mod

after 3 or 4 cooks with my duo the charcoal grate finally bit the dusty. the fire box comes with cooking grates which i never use. i trimmed a little off each grate then welded them to 2 small L bars. the new grate sits dead even with the intake on the firebox. i have plenty of room for ventilation without having to empty the ash pan. i can remove the ash pan without having to remove the charcoal grate also. here are some pics

i did a test run on the new grate with some lump. first time using it and i loved it. smoked some atb's, brisket and a creation i saw in this forum. i cant remember who posted it but thanks they were killer. cream cheese mixed with chives and bacon pieces. wrapped in bar s ham then wrapped in bacon. the new grate worked perfect and i still had plenty more cooking room after the 10 hour burn. cheap mod for the sfb on the duo.

Nice stuff!

How did you weld the pieces to the cast?

Doesn't it take special rod to weld cast?

i had a buddy at work weld it for me. i'll check with him in the morning and see just in case anyone is interested in doing this mod. it really doesnt need to be welded together. i just figured it would be easier having it in one piece. it does need to be trimmed though to fit even with the intake. oh and you have to remove the ash pan to insert and remove the modded charcoal grate/grates.

my buddy at work said the grate is cast steel thats why he was asble to weld it. he said if it was cast iron he wouldnt have been able to do it with the mig welder
