I just fired my 48 for the first time last night and I built the fire on the rack/grate. My question is if I am not using any charcoal di I need to use the fire grate or just build a good fire in the bottom of the box? I Know you need a good coal bed and it seamed to fall thru the grate quite a bit. I didnt know if I dont ned to ust the grate if using all wood. Hope this makes since..

I think if you have air space under your fire, you'll get a more efficent draft. I know that rings true with my CG. As far as the coal bed dropping thru, you might want to pick up a piece of thick expanded metal to prevent this. That's just my take on it as I don't own a Lang....there are a few Lang owners here that could probably share their experience with you.
Good Luck with your new toy!

^^^^^^ What he said!

You need an airspace under your fire for air.
