I'm thinking of buying a load of hickory from Atoka, OK and was wondering what type/types of hickory comes from that area?
Thanks Mike

Atoka is in what is known as the Crosstimbers region. The primary specie of hickory there is Black Hickory (http://www.museum.state.il.us/muslink/forest/htmls/trees/C-texana.html)

While I prefer shagbark hickory, black hickory is great for smoking.

On the other hand, pecan is readily available and plentiful in my area. I prefer pecan to hickory.

Thanks, I'm getting a good price so I may give it a try. Around here they treat hickory like gold. Pecan isn't priced much better. If the price sounds right the splits are too short. My smoker likes 20" to 23" splits.

Atoka is probably as good a hickory as you are going to get between you and the Ozarks.

Thanks for the input I found someone in Sulphur Springs, about 60 miles from my house, that had both pecan and hickory. So I bought a full cord 1/2 and 1/2 for $160. Thought that was a heck of a deal.
