View Full Version : Plum wood for smoke?

In my new house there is a plum tree in the back yard. Yes, many folks say "keep it". However, that's not an option! That baby is coming down. My question is, how is plum wood for smoking meat? It seems to me like it would probably create a nice smoke, especially for pork. Any experiences folks?

Plum is really good in the smoker I use it all the time one of the better woods for smoking meats

Very nice wood for smoking...I bought some Fruita Plum a while back and really like it.

I cut down the neighbor's plum tree and used it.
Plum is very good mild wood for smoking, but like most fruit woods, it is best if not overly seasoned.

I think you should leave the tree and only take a little at a time. That way you get a continual supply of better wood.

That's a thought Tim. Ok, by "overly seasoned", are we talking, season a year or season a month or two? Chances are I'll be combining it with hickory or pecan. Thoughts?

By my experience most frutiwood is best within a couple months of cutting. YMMV. It seems to be the sap that gives it its magic.
